Beyond the 1,945 General-Use Characters: 114 Additional Kanji You Need to Know for the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) Level 1
In 2002, Level 1 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT, 日本語能力試験)
covered 2,040 kanji. (In 2001, the number was 2,036).
Of the 1,945 general-use characters, 19 were excluded from the range of the test.
(See below for a list of the 19 excluded general-use characters).
The additional 114 characters falling within the range of the test included: (1)
commonly used non-general-use kanji characters; and (2) characters used
predominately in Japanese names (人名漢字).
