196 Newly Approved Joyo (General-Use) Kanji
UPDATES

The committee charged with making recommendations to the government for
a revision of the joyo kanji list has completed its deliberations. The
196 kanji listed below will be added to the current list of 1,945 joyo
kanji, and the following 5 kanji will be removed:
銑セン pig iron
錘つむ spindle
匁 もんめ a unit of weight
勺 しゃく a unit of capacity
脹 チョウswell
The revised joyo kanji list will thus comprise 2,136 characters.

Some changes have been announced to the 191-kanji candidate list originally listed here and discussed in Column #99, including the removal of 4 kanji candidates and the addition of 9. The
kanji candidate list now stands at 196 characters: 191 - 4 + 9 = 196. The
main list below has been corrected and now stands at 196 characters.
The following 4 kanji have been removed from the original 191-kanji candidate
list:
